ASTM WK96751
Rationale: Until 2023 the ASTM A484 standard specification for Stainless Steel Bars, Billets and Shapes had requirement for Hot Finish Angles TABLE 13 that specifies tolerance for leg length, weight per foot and tolerance for right angle between the legs. The latest revision ASTM A 484- 24B has removed the TABLE 13 from previous revisions and introduced the new TABLE 14 for Angles (L shapes), Bulb Angles and Zees that requires different tolerances. This table was copied form ASTM A6 that is for Structural Steel Bars, Plate, Shapes and Sheet Piling. The table also requires thickness tolerances that was not a requirement in the previous ASTM A484 editions. This table cannot be applied to hot roll stainless steel angles with equal legs. The thickness tolerance can be applied to cold-form angles but not for standard hot roll stainless steel angles. Unlike cold-formed angles which have sharp corners, standard hot-rolled angles have a fillet radius on the inside corner and slightly tapered legs on the outside, which is a result of the manufacturing process. It is not possible to define thickness on "tapered" legs for standard hot roll angles. Therefore the geometry for standard hot roll angles per ASTM A484 in all previous versions was defined by leg length, weight/foot and tolerance for right angle between the legs. Proposed: 1. Change the title of TABLE 14 Permitted Variations in Cross Section for Angles (L Shapes), Bulb Angles, and Zees. to TABLE 14 Permitted Variations in Cross Section for Cold-Formed Angles (L Shapes), Bulb Angles, and Zees. 2. Reintroduce TABLE 13 Permitted Variations for Hot-finished Angles from ASTM A484M Revision 22.
