ASTM WK96717
This is the third in a series of ballots that propose supplementing Table X1.1 “Standard Time-Temperature Curve for Control of Fire-Resistance Tests” in Appendix X.1 in Test Standard ASTM E119-24 with analytic equations that can be used to calculate the standard furnace temperature as a function of time. The second ballot of this proposed change was a concurrent ballot that was issued September 12, 2024, and closed October 14, 2024. The ballot received one negative and three affirmative votes with comment. The negative by Jeff Linville was declared non-persuasive at the E05.11 meeting and the E05 Main closing meeting in Orlando, FL (SC vote: 33/0/7 and Main vote: 36/0/10). The current ballot consists of three parts: • Part 1 of the current ballot is identical to the second ballot item with some minor changes to the wording in the last sentence of the proposed Note X.1.1, items 1 and 2. • Part 2 proposes a change in section 7.1.1.2 of E119-24 to clarify that the additional time-temperature information is provided in Appendix X.1, both in tabular and equation forms. • Part 3 adjusts selected values in Table X1.1. so that all values in the table are consistent with the corresponding calculated values. Note that the equations allow for a more accurate calculation of the area above the 68 °F base because intermediate temperature values can be calculated at times in between the times at which the temperatures are given in Table X1.1 (e.g., every 6 seconds, which is a commonly used scan intervale). However, to maintain some consistency in the tabulated areas above 68 °F, it is proposed that they be calculated the same way as in the current version of the standard (i.e., without using intermediate temperature values). The current values in Table X.1.1 are provided below for reference. Part 1 is motivated by the comment on the second ballot submitted by Rod McPhee. Parts 2 and 3 are the result of suggestions made by Kevin Hyland in his comments on the second ballot.
