Denatured fuel ethanol is used as a renewable transport fuel and is blended at various concentrations into gasoline. High blends up to 83% by volume are used in flexible-fuel vehicles whilst lower concentrations, 5% or 10 % by volume are used in spark-ignition fuels. It is important to check the concentration of ethanol in gasoline-ethanol blends in order to verify it is within limits or does not exceed the maximum permissible. Other alcohols such as methanol are used in small quantities as blend components in automotive gasoline to increase octane rating. Alcohols are not permitted in aviation gasoline due to potential issues with fuel system compatibility and phase separation. Alcohols are corrosive and can degrade fuel lines, seals, and other components in older fuel systems. This test method is applicable for quality control in the production and distribution of aviation gasoline, gasoline, gasoline-ethanol blends and denatured fuel ethanol.
