Rationale

Insulating and other petroleum products use D974 and have specifications for acid number less than one. For these materials there was a need to use a weaker titrant (0.01 M) to improve the method precision. The committee also wanted to permit the use of automatic titrators equipped with an optical sensor for the analysis. The ballot is to add a Procedure B for acid number less than one using an automatic titrator. Only the revised test method sections in red text are the additions being balloted. For convenience, the section balloted also includes the current text in black which is not a part of the ballot. An Interlaboratory study # 1565 was conducted was conducted to provide a precision statement for the test method.
