Rationale

In previous task group meetings, it was identified that section 8.2.5.2 of the E241 Standard references ASTM E331 and E1105 for water penetration resistance testing, but ASTM E283 and E783 were not referenced in this section. The movement of moisture laden air, and as well as the thermal impacts of air leakage can result in condensation and long-term moisture related issues such as corrosion or mold. Under a previous work item, it was proposed that Section 8.2.5.2 be updated to reference air leakage through fenestration systems and testing of fenestration systems for air leakage. However, several negative comments were found persuasive, and ultimately it was determined that Section 8.2.5.2 was not the most appropriate location to acknowledge the effects of air leakage through fenestration systems and the ASTM standard testing from determining air leakage through a fenestration system. Section 8.4 already includes discussion of many of the points identified in the comments from negative voters on the previous work item. As such, it was suggested that the air leakage testing references be added to Section 8.4. This work item is specifically to update the E241 standard to include references to air leakage testing. The references section of ASTM E241 will also be updated to include ASTM E2178, ASTM E283, ASTM E783, ASTM E1186. Additional comments or proposed updates to the language in section 8.4 will be considered as new work items.
