New Test Method for Measurement of Suspended Sediment Removal Efficiency of Sediment Pond Skimmers
1. Scope
This test method concerns measurement of the efficiency of sediment pond skimmers in removing suspended sediment from simulated stormwater runoff under conditions defined herein. This test method is intended to be applied in a laboratory setting to provide a common basis for comparing system performance. This test method is not intended for use in determining field removal efficiency.
This test method is intended to provide accurate, repeatable data for any stakeholder interested in evaluating sediment pond skimmer performance. Meeting the requirements of the test does not necessarily mean any given Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) will certify the results. AHJs should be consulted prior to undertaking testing since some AHJs may require certain modifications, exclusions of certain methods, or additional criteria be met for sediment pond skimmer certification. This test method does not certify sediment pond skimmer devices; it is up to the AHJ to certify results from this test method and to certify that a given sediment pond skimmer’s performance will meet their specific performance goals.

Rationale
Sediment pond skimmers have been used as an erosion control practice during construction for a long time. Skimmers are now migrating towards post-construction stormwater control measures. Although there is a standard to determine the hydraulic characteristics of these devices (D8107-25), currently there is no standard to determine removal performance of these devices.
