New Terminology for Fresh Goods Supply Chain

1. Scope
Fresh goods are harvested from their source location where grown or organically grown or produced. Harvested goods under ideal handling conditions will have a predicted shelf life wherein the quality is deemed good enough for sale according to standards, which may be different from good to good. Some goods, when harvested or processed, will receive one or more Certifications of Authentication (COA), that should travel with the cargo from farm to buyer.
Keywords
fresh; supply chain; produce
Rationale

Cargo that is considered fresh will have some limited time for extraction of value before it becomes waste. Perishable items must traverse multiple stakeholders who should provide the conditions for proper handling of the goods that are being transported from value added producer to value added producer until reaching the desired consumer in consumable condition. Product (quality) assessment may be done by an observer or a testing or measurement method to determine ripeness or saleability. This standard specifies the terms and definitions to be used in this context. The exact process for any assessment may be covered in related Guides, Practices and/or Methods.
