ASTM WK95835
Revision of D1655-24b Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels
Rationale
Rational for revision Several years ago, test methods for both viscosity and copper corrosion were ‘officially jointed’ and identified as the referee methodology. As ‘officially jointed’ test methods (and per D1655 Note 3), this was denoted as Dxxxx/IP xxx. Over time the status of the viscosity and copper corrosion test methods has changed from ‘officially jointed’ to ‘technically equivalent’. As ‘technically equivalent’ test methods (and per D1655 Note 3), the listing changed from Dxxxx/IP xxx to Dxxxx or IP xxx. Currently, two ‘technically equivalent’ but different test methods are identified in D1655 as the referee methodology for both viscosity and copper corrosion. Unless ‘officially jointed’, it is felt that only one test method can be listed as the referee. The proposal therefore is to correct by designating D445 and D130 as the referee methodologies for viscosity and copper corrosion, respectively, and moving the ‘technically equivalent’ IP methods to the alternative column. This change will impact viscosity in both Table 1 and Table A1.1, and copper corrosion in Table 1 only.
