ASTM WK95623

Revision of F2620-24 Standard Practice for Heat Fusion Joining of Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings

Rationale

This project will update - TABLE 3 Minimum Melt Bead Size. Some questions have arisen around the minimum bead size requirement in the standard for specifically 8” IPS pipe. The standard states that pipe sizes 3.5” to <= 8.62” should be a minimum size of 3/16“ and greater than 8.62 is a minimum size of ¼”. Nominal 8” IPS pipe is designated as 8.625” and this is causing confusion as to which bead minimum bead size should be used. The original TR33 document included 8” IPS in the smaller bead size designation. However, it appears that when F2620 was first established, the rounding used for the table dropped the third significant digit. While this has been in place since the original document, the more recent incorporation by reference of F2620 by PHMSA has raised questions. This revision would change the size designation to be 3.5” to <=8.63” to include the 8” IPS size and eliminate the confusion. No other pipe size ranges in the table have this issue.
