New Test Methods for Large Scale Evaluation of Temporary Sediment Control Devices

1. Scope
These test methods are large scale with specified collection devices and larger volume flow not readily available with other SCD test methods to obtain useful data regarding flow rate, turbidity, and suspended solids. These three criteria are important to determine the effectiveness of SCDs in relationship to site specific criteria. The large-scale nature of these methods allows the quantification and efficiency of the various SCDs ability to reduce turbidity, remove suspended solids, and reduce flow rate.
Keywords
Flow rate reduction; large-scale testing; SCD; sediment control device; suspended solids reduction; turbidity reduction
Rationale

Until now there has been little to no scientifically sound, repeatable, full scale testing methodology that replicates field conditions to test and determine SCD performance. This new standard includes full scale test methodology for five types of SCDs: curb opening protection, inlet protection, in-flow/check dam and perimeter protection, sediment curtains and barriers and lastly dewatering bags and devices. The data that are measured and recorded from these methods are: % turbidity reduction, % flow rate reduction, and % solids removal.
