Rationale

During the 2024/25 winter, revisions to ASTM E1820 were successfully balloted, aimed at improving guidance in the standard (specifically, 10.2.4, Note A9.4, and Note A11.3) related to the prevention of ductile instabilities. These changes were implemented in the ASTM E1820-25a edition. One of the comments received during the concurrent E08/E08.07 ballot of the changes indicated that the standard does not have a definition of “ductile instability”. This ballot proposes adding the following definition to the Terminology section of E1820 (section 3).
