ASTM WK94935
New Practice for Combustion of Coal by Oxygen Vessel Combustion and Preparation of Vessel Rinse Solutions for Analysis of Total Chlorine and Fluoride
1. Scope
1.1 This test practice covers the combustion of coal analysis samples by oxygen vessel combustion and preparation of the rinse solution from that vessel for laboratory analysis of Cl and F anions. Keywords
anions; ion chromatography; ion selective electrodeRationale
The purpose of this practice is to prepare coal analysis samples for the determination of total chlorine and fluorine in coal. The coal is oxidized in a combustion vessel and the combustion product is dissolved in an absorbing solution. The combustion vessel is rinsed into a container, filtered, brought to a known mass or volume, and sent to a laboratory for analysis. Measurement of chlorine in coals may be useful in the evaluation of slagging problems and corrosion in engineering processes. Measurement of fluorine may be useful in the evaluation of fluorine emissions from coal combustion or conversion processes and maybe used for compliance determinations when acceptable to a regulatory authority using performance based criteria.
