ASTM WK94934
New Practice for Standard Practice for Performance Evaluation of Particulate Matter (PM) Sensor Systems for Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene Applications
1. Scope
This practice establishes a standard practice for the performance evaluation of particulate matter (PM) sensor systems after being subjected to various laboratory and field test conditions including changes in the PM size fraction of interest (i.e., PM1.0,2.5,5.0,10, respirable PM fraction, etc.), PM size interferent concentrations, and changes in temperature, relative humidity. Keywords

Industrial hygienists and other environmental and occupational health and safety professionals make important decisions to protect worker health based on exposure assessment data (which includes data collected by sensor systems). Direct-reading sensor system technologies have demonstrated utility in detecting and monitoring hazardous exposure conditions or other factors that may pose health and safety risks to workers. These sensor systems can provide important data to help health and safety professionals take action to minimize or eliminate harmful exposures to workers and the community. Better information is needed with respect to the performance of these sensors so that users can make informed decisions regarding their selection and specification. The primary anticipated users of this standard practice will be: laboratories, IH consultants, practicing IHs, and sensor device manufacturers, developers and distributors of sensor systems used in workplace health and safety exposure assessment. The specification is likely to be referenced in standards and/or codes that address performance for the worker health and safety monitoring/exposure assessments, and possibly in IAQ applications.
