Rationale

There is demand from users to order A572 Grade 60 and Grade 65 structural shapes in flange thicknesses beyond the current thickness limit of 2 inches. An A01.02 Subcommittee Task Group has reviewed production data from a shape producer that demonstrates the capability to achieve Grade 60 and 65 tensile properties in shapes up to 2-1/2 inch thick. Accordingly, this Task Group has recommended A572 be revised to increase the maximum thickness for structural shapes for Grade 60 and 65 from 2 inch to 2-1/2 inch.
