Rationale

A number of years ago, ASTM International and MPIF entered an agreement to standardize definitions of terms related to powder metallurgy. The definitions in ASTM Terminology B243 and MPIF Standard 09 are being harmonized to fulfil the agreement. Currently, MPIF has an additional terminology document for Metal Injection Molding (MIM), MPIF Standard 64. Some of the terms in that standard are included in ASTM Terminology B243, but some are not. This ballot item is to add some of those terms from MPIF Standard 64 to ASTM Terminology B243. Subcommittee B09.01 on Nomenclature and Technical Data asks that you approve these terms, as currently defined by MPIF, to include in B243. The Subcommittee will review the definitions once they are included in B243 to determine whether any changes are needed and will review those with MPIF. We simply ask now for approval to add these as given into B243. Once all the remaining terms from MPIF Standard 64 are incorporated into B243, MPIF will ballot to withdraw MPIF Standard 64. A Subcommittee Ballot negative was received on the first attempt at defining brown density. As a result, an alternate term and definition are being proposed here.
