New Test Method for Friction testing of adhesive-backed polymeric mats used within bathing surfaces

1. Scope
This method provides a means to quantify the friction of adhesive-backed polymeric mats used within bathtub and shower pan products.
Keywords
bathmat; bath mat; friction
Rationale

Adhesive-backed polymeric mats are an option for improving the available friction of existing bathtubs and shower pans. Mats that use texturing or 3D-profiled features to facilitate available friction are less suited to friction testing with typical portable tribometers. This is because portable tribometers typically apply a fraction of the forces applied by a human, and these devices typically use shoe polymer that are much less compliant than a human foot. This method would provide for human-scale force application utilizing a SATRA STM603 whole-shoe tribometer (ref ASTM F2913) in conjunction with a elastomeric surrogate heel slider designed to conform to the test surface in a manner more representative of a human heel.
