ASTM WK94353
Rationale: The ACPA brought forward a comment with regards to the required measurement of the pipe dimeter defined on ASTM C76 section 12.1. The current verbiage requiring 4 diametric measurements of pipe is confusing to producer members and the clarification shown below is recommended. Please note that the practice of 4 dimetric measurements in pipe is common and accurate. The goal of this effort is an attempt to clarify the requirement by adding that the measurements are to be taken two measurements on each side. This item was balloted in 2025 the ballot to the C76 standard passed. The ballot to the C76 m standard failed because the ballot language contained non SI units. The exact language in the metric standard is different. The proposed ballot adds similar inspection requirements to the metric standard. Ballot language: 12. Permissible Variations 12.1 Internal Diameter—See Table 6. At the manufacturer’s option, the internal diameter shall be one of two alternatives, the Designated Diameter or the Converted English Diameter. Pipe sections that are intended to be jointed to each other shall be furnished with the same internal diameter alternative. The internal diameter of pipe manufactured to the Designated Diameters shall vary not more than +-1.5% from the Desig- nated Diameter for 300 mm to 600 mm and +-1%or 610 mm, whichever is greater, for larger pipe. The internal diameter of pipe manufactured to the Converted English Diameters shall vary not more than +-1.5 % from the Converted English Diameter for 305 mm to 610 mm and +-1% or 610 mm, whichever is greater, for larger pipe. For pipe manufactured to converted English Diameters, the corresponding Designated Diameter shown in Table 6 shall apply for all other require- ments of this speci?cation. These diameter requirements are based on the average of four diameter measurements (two measurements at each end of the pipe) at a distance of 300mm. from the end of the bell and spigot of the pipe. Diameter veri?cation shall be made on the number of pipe selected for test per Section 11.
