The proposed standard is needed to improve the performance and safety of components. In certain industries, contamination of AM metal feedstock is a significant concern, yet there is currently no standardized method to measure it. The recent recall of airplane engines due to contaminants originating from the powder has highlighted the critical need for controlling and measuring powder cleanliness. Although Work Item WK80171 presents various techniques to assess contamination, it lacks specific standard methods or guidelines, which significantly limits its impact. The proposed standard aims to contribute to addressing the PM7 gap identified in the America Makes Standardization Roadmap for AM. This roadmap emphasizes the need for specifications to guide procurement decisions and establish requirements and acceptance criteria for metal powder to ensure quality assurance. The expected users are metal powder producers, powder users, OEMs and µXCT inspection service providers. The standard will be used to inspect and qualify powders and certify that the amount and characteristics are within accepted limits. Acceptance criteria are material, process and application specific and will not be prescribed in the standard.
