New Practice for Safety Management System (SMS) for Human Spaceflight
1. Scope
This standard practice will provide best practices on creating an SMS including suggested topics to cover for safety policy, how to promote of a positive safety culture, formal methods for identifying hazards and mitigating risk, and best practices for how to assure the overall safety performance of the spaceflight organizations. An SMS is intended to be designed and developed so the organization’s employees are able to manage risks as a part of the operations and business decision-making processes. This standard is meant to serve as a best practice to assists organization’s leadership, management
teams, and employees in making effective and informed safety decisions.
An SMS is in integral part of risk management for many high-risk industries and the spaceflight industry needs to have general consensus on the best practices for what should be included.
