Rationale

Concrete masonry lintels manufactured to meet C1623 are manufactured using dry-cast concrete in a similar manner to other dry-cast manufactured concrete products including C55 (Building Brick), C90 (Loadbearing CMU), C129 (Nonloadbearing CMU), C139 (Catch Basins and Manholes), C1372 (SRW Units), C1634 (Facing Brick and other Facing Units), C1877 (Adhered CMU) and C1884 (Ballast Units). ‘Dry-Cast’ has been added to the title of all of the related standards listed above. In addition, a definition of ‘dry-cast’ was added to each standard and ‘dry-cast’ was added to the keywords. To maintain consistency, this ballot item is proposing to add ‘Solid Dry-Cast’ to the title of C1623 as well as add a definition of ‘dry-cast’ and include it in the keywords. While it may not be strictly necessary to add the definition of ‘dry-cast’ to each of these standards, the task group thinks it will improve understanding and clarity to the users of the standard and will maintain consistency amongst all the standards. Additional changes are proposed to this standard, including: • Small edits to 1.1 to be consistent with the other standards. • Deletion of 1.2 – currently, 1.2 allows for lintels to either be machine-made or hand-tamp. The definition for ‘dry-cast’ requires that a machine be used. To the best knowledge of the subcommittee, no producer is manufacturing these units by hand, so it is proposed to remove the hand-tamp option. As such, 1.2 is being deleted in its entirety as it is no longer needed. • Small edits to 1.6 to clarify the language. • Update the Keywords to reference ‘hydraulic cement’ to be consistent with the other standards.
