ASTM WK91760
Revision of D910-24 Standard Specification for Leaded Aviation Gasolines
Rationale
Rationale for revision During the ASTM D02.J0.02 Piston Engine Aviation Fuels Committee meeting held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Austin, TX on June 19, 2024, the allocation of Aviation Gasoline (Avgas) dye colors was discussed. The Chair of the ASTM Avgas Dyes and Markings Task Force observed that ASTM D910 Grade 100 leaded Avgas appeared to no longer be in production, potentially releasing the color green. Availability of this color would be of significant benefit for ASTM high octane unleaded Avgas offers currently under development. Grade 100 contains the highest permissible tetraethyl lead content of the ASTM D910 grades. The product has been superseded in the global market by Grade 100 Low Lead (100LL) with a further grade, 100 Very Low Lead (100VLL) also recently introduced by the industry. Both 100LL and 100VLL are dyed blue, a helpful rationalization of color for leaded Avgas identification and aircraft use. Given the above, a proposal to ballot removal of leaded Grade 100 from D910 to release the color green for reallocation was made and agreed. Such a ballot helpfully offers a formal route to determine if ASTM D910 Grade 100 remains in production and, if in sufficient footprint and quantity, to retain a primary Avgas color. Approval of this ballot was granted by Subcommittee J in June 2024, at the semi-annual meeting in Austin, TX.
