There are multiple reasons to do this: - ASTM D1193 was eliminated from ASTM C114 and replaced to read “reagent water, n—water purified by the process of distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, or any combination of the three processes.” This was done because D1193 was too rigorous. Thus, C114 simply describes a process, there are no limits imposed (as is done in D1193). - ASTM D1193 is also rigorous in its definition of Type III or IV water. - Most of other cement/mortar ASTM test methods no longer prescribe D1193. For example, ASTM C1038 now refers to ASTM C114 - It is unlikely many laboratories actually check that the water being used conforms to ASTM D1193. - The change was discussed at the subcommittee and the subcommittee agreed that it is unlikely such pure water is needed.
