ASTM WK86879
Adventure Attractions range from having a modicum of patron-control to being exclusively controlled by the patron. Examples of these are Mountain Coasters, for which the patron only has the ability to slow and stop the ride vehicle, to Trampoline Courts where, once released by the attendant, the patron is in complete control of their performance on the trampolines. In addition, unlike scuba diving for which there is well-established and certificated training regimen, no organize training and certification system is in place for mountain coaster operation, trampoline training, or other adventure attractions such as warped walls, ninja courses, climbing walls, and the like. The operator of facilities for these Adventure Attractions must therefore provide as much information as possible and rely on the patron’s exercise of appropriate discretion Thus the purpose of this practice standard is to promulgate knowledge and understanding through a consistent set of verbiage and symbology used in the presentation of informational, instructional and warning signage whose purpose is to equip participants with knowledge and understanding of the skills and physical rigors sufficient to allow the safe use and enjoyment of amusement rides and devices that are largely patron-directed and thus, by their very nature, require active responsible participant involvement for proper and safe operation. Rather than attempt to provide specific signage for each instance of each attraction in every venue, this proposed standard provides guidance for the development of graphical and verbal presentation material with particular emphasis on patron participation devices or elements that are found in or comprise Adventure Attractions that is based on present thinking in the human factors of information presentation, absorption, comprehension, and compliance. This standard is intended for immediate applicability and use for Adventure Attractions however it is anticipated that it could be expanded to all F24 amusement rides and devices should the contents be deemed useful for non- patron-directed amusement rides and devices.
