New Test Method for Determination of Water in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) using Gas Chromatography and Barrier Discharge Ionization Detection (BID)
1. Scope
This method determines trace water in LPG using Gas Chromatography (GC) with a Barrier Ionization Discharge (BID) detector. Sample is introduced to a capillary column using a dedicated valving system. Water separates from other sample components chromatographically and passes through the BID detector with a response proportional to concentration. Trace ppm concentrations are calculated by comparison to a calibration curve.
Sulfur compounds or other compounds that react with iodine potentially interfering with the Karl Fischer titration methods do not interfere.
There is a need for a simplified method for the determination of trace water in LPG. This method can be used to complement, or replace Karl-Fischer methods such as D7995, particularly in samples with interferences that make determination by D7995 difficult.
