We propose this standard for determination of effective thickness for evaluation of laminated glass structural performance for a broad range of section geometries (e.g., double, triple, and multi-ply laminated glass plies), loading and boundary conditions and three effective thickness methods. The prevailing method of calculating effective thickness is in Appendix X9 of Practice E1300, but this method is only intended for simply supported beams with certain loading conditions and laminates having a 2-ply makeup. Additional effective thickness methods have been developed since Appendix X9 in Practice E1300 that are more applicable for different loading cases and support conditions and that can accommodate 3-ply and multi-ply laminates. Some of these include cantilevered glass, fins, and plates. The glass strength task group of the E06.52 subcommittee determined that rather than extend the Appendix of Practice E1300, a new standard should be authored that could be subsequently referenced by Practice E1300 and Practice E2751 following its issuance.
