Rapid adoption of AM by manufacturing industry, agencies, and private consumers increase its attractiveness as attack target. According to MxD report, 35% of all cyber-espionage attacks in U.S. target manufacturing sector; 98% of all manufacturers having 500 or fewer employees and 73% having 20 or fewer employees. Furthermore, a recent study funded by and conducted in collaboration with NIST identified numerous characteristic aspects of AM Security that will render direct application of security practices from other domains insufficient for complete protection. Under these circumstances, manufacturers will not be able to adequately address security threats without a dedicated standard.
