New Test Method for Additive Manufacturing -- Determination of Hardened Mechanical Properties of Additively Constructed Concrete and Mortar

1. Scope

1. This test method covers separate procedures for the determination of compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength and interface strength for samples extracted from additively constructed concrete and additively constructed mortar components.
2. This test method provides description of the sample size based on aggrgates and bead dimensions and the number of samples.
2. This test method provides description of the testing apperatus to be used for each procedure.
3. This practice addresses the performance of additively constructed concrete and mortar samples by means of mechanical testing.

additive construction; three-dimensional printing; concrete coring; concrete sawing compressive strength, flexural strength

We would like to propose a test method to determine mechanical properties from samples extracted from additively constructed concrete components. In practice there is a significant difference between the behavior of cast components versus additively constructed components using cementitious materials. The mechanical properties obtained from samples extracted from components built using additive construction versus cast construction are significantly different, and are in many instances lower in magnitude. This test method will provide a universal procedure for testing laboratories to determine the representative material properties. This test method will allow architects, engineers and approval agencies a means to define the mechanical performance of building components produced additive construction. This practice will allow architects and engineers to create correlations between the mechanical performances of additive constructed concrete and mortars with design values and cast counterparts. This practice will allow architects and engineers to have better understanding of the building components produced by additive construction and define requirements for utilizing additive construction technology. The principles in this practice will be applicable to AC building components cured at least 7 days for laboratory, and on-field conditions.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
