ASTM WK88006

New Specification for Restricted substances used or contained in Materials to Manufacture Cannabis/Hemp Extract Vaporizers

1. Scope

Identifying and listing materials which should tend to be avoided in the construction of extract vaporizers that are in direct and indirect contact with liquid extract.

Keywords

Extract; extractable; leachable; metal; ceramic; glass; plastic; polymer; corrosion; toxicity

Rationale

Currently, there are no specific standards regarding the physical materials that should tend to be used and tend not to be used in the construction of cannabis extract vaporizers. The conditions under which vaporizer materials may be exposed can differ greatly from those of other inhaler products because of the nature of the cannabis material and the exposure to elevated temperatures. Given that vaporizer users are increasing, it would be in the publics best interest to have a standards organization lead the way in advising and providing guidance to the vaporizer manufacturing industry to assist in safeguarding the health and well-being of the public.

The standard would be used by manufacturers in selecting current or possible extract vaporizer construction materials which would be more or less advisable for their customers.

The standard would be used by distributors and licensed producers to help provide guidance in determining which vaporizer hardware may be more or less appropriate for their customers based on the construction materials.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
