Revision of C1896-20 Standard Specification for Joints for Concrete Arch Pipe Using Profile Rubber Gaskets

Rationale

The current language, in effect, favors pre-lubed profile gaskets on RCAP where gasket material is physically present in the control annular space (CAS) to stop the total offset of the joint (going concrete to concrete). When using non pre-lubed "general" profile gaskets, the current requirements of Section 6.1.5 could mathematically prevent a profile gasket from meeting the 15% minimum deformation unless a very high percentage of rubber is put in the joint, potentially overpacking the joint and causing concrete failure. These proposed changes to Section 6.1.5 would replace prescriptive requirements with performance-based requirements, thereby lessening restrictions on certain gasket profiles.
