ASTM WK86777

Revision of C1029-20 Standard Specification for Spray-Applied Rigid Cellular Polyurethane Thermal Insulation

Rationale

Section 10.5 of the standard, determination of tensile strength, needs clarification on which type specimens to use for testing. The required test method, ASTM D1623, lists three different options for specimen types (Type A, B, and C). Its common to use Type C for closed cell foam products. Type C specimens are rectangular block shaped. Type C specimens are required for other closed cell foam material specifications in the US and Canada. Feedback from the task group and the spray polyurethane foam industry also suggested that Type C specimens were appropriate and commonly used. This ballot revises section 10.5 to require the use of Type C specimens, as well as provides a minimum number of specimens that shall be tested.
