New Specification for Children's Step Stools and Learning Towers
1. Scope
- Create a consumer safety specification that covers the performance requirements and methods of test to ensure the satisfactory performance of a Kitchen Step Stool.
- This consumer safety specification is intended to minimize injuries to children resulting from normal usage and reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of a Kitchen Step Stool.
- It will address (at a minimum) head entrapment, tip over, safety restraints/bars, minimum/maximum age, height and weight of the child, potential for falls, and pinch points.
- For purposes of this consumer safety specification, a Kitchen Step Stool is a free-standing step stool that elevates a child to standard countertop height. The step stool is made for the purpose of holding a child, up to 6 years of age, who can remain in a standing position due to the child’s own coordination, and normally for the purposes of helping with and/or observing normal kitchen activities and/or play/learning activities. The step stool may be height adjustable.
- This consumer safety specification will also address multiple use products (e.g. Child’s Desk that converts to a Kitchen Step Stool
