Scope
1.1. This method describes the analysis of 0.05 – 1.0% w/w platinum in Fresh or Used
Petrochemical Catalysts on Alumina supports. It can also be applied to catalysts on zeolite
base with minor modifications.
1.2 In used catalyst material gamma alumina may transform to alpha alumina. It is
sometimes difficult to dissolve completely in a mixture of sulfuric acid and phosphoric
acid. If any residue remains it must be treated for platinum recovery. Platinum can be
recovered using silver or gold collection through fire assay.
1.3 Suitability of this method is limited for samples containing very high loadings of
potassium and barium. These elements form insoluble complexes with platinum.
1.4. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of
measurements are included in this guide.
1.5. This standard does not purport to address any safety concerns associated with its use. It
is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health
practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
