The standard provides a basis for deciding whether jobs can be continued after a process interruption, what change in material properties is to be expected and how to practically continue the build job to minimize effects on the parts.
PBF-LB; interruption; process; machine operator
Powder Bed Fusion - Laser Beam (PBF-LB) processes can take days or weeks to finish. Process interruptions can be necessary to refill powder and shielding gas or can be caused a variety of other factors, such as minor machine malfunctions. AM manufacturers are strongly incentivized to continue the build to save time, money, and resources, however, the resulting part will likely be affected by the interruption. Effects can range from visual imperfections to impaired mechanical properties, which can in turn become an issue for safety relevant parts.
Given the importance of the issue, a standard is needed to determine if and how machine operators can continue build jobs after process interruptions and whether interrupted parts are suitable for further use.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
