Revision of D6400-21 Standard Specification for Labeling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities

Rationale

This ballot adds a requirement to D6400 prohibiting the intentional addition of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to a compostable product or a material. Compostability specifications have a “basic requirement” to have “No Adverse Impacts on Ability of Compost to Support Plant Growth,” which includes not introducing unacceptable levels of regulated materials, such as heavy metals. Considering that PFAS are now being tested and regulated at composting facilities, it’s important that compostable products be appropriately screened so they can be a trusted feedstock.
This ballot is aligned with current requirements in the International Standards ISO 17088, ISO 18606, EN 13432, EN 14995 and AS 4736. As noted in Section 1.4, D6400 and ISO 17088 are meant to be equivalent standard, and this ballot will better align these standards and advance the relevance of D6400.
