New Practice for Additive Manufacturing -- Powder Bed Fusion -- In-situ Defect Mitigation and Evaluation

1. Scope

This practice covers procedures for closed-loop mitigation of known and undesired material discontinuities in laser-based powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (PBF-LB) through in-situ intervention of machine processing conditions.

Keywords

Control; Anomaly Detection; Correction; Closed-loop

Rationale

o Methods for anomaly and defect identification have been proposed and adopted by researchers, end users, and machine manufacturers. However, standard methods for mitigation of identified defects, or material discontinuities, are absent. This Standard will provide best practices to guide implementing and quantifying the efficacy of in-situ material discontinuity mitigation in laser-based powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. Current methods to reduce material discontinuities are costly, time intensive, and are performed post-process. The practices identified in this Standard will enable effective mitigation of material discontinuities without additional post-process procedures and at minimal cost.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
