New Test Method for Nuclear Waste Glass Static Dissolution Testing to Determine Stage III Rates

1. Scope

Produce an ASTM standard test method in which static glass dissolution tests can be performed with and without seed additions (e.g., zeolite seeds) to study all stages of the glass dissolution behavior: 1) initial, 2) residual, and 3) and predominantly, resumption (i.e., Stage III) in a more predictable manner. This method builds on ASTM C1285 by providing instructions for periodic sampling of static dissolution experiments to monitor: 1) solution concentrations, 2) pH at temperature, and 3) solids samplings to monitor evolution alteration products versus reaction progress. The test method will be applicable to testing performed from 10 °C up to 90 °C in stainless steel vessels with sampling ports. The method will also provide a shrinking core model calculation to track reaction progress of highly altered nuclear waste glass experiments.
