New Guide for Selection of 3D Vision Technologies for Industrial Applications

1. Scope

The development and maintenance of guidance materials for best practices in the selection of typical commercial 3D vision technologies and imaging systems for industrial applications including imaging techniques such as structured light (laser and projected), photometric, stereo, time-of-flight, and LIDAR. The principal application focus will include but not be limited to
in-process part/object/feature inspection; robot guidance; robotic assembly; and autonomous mobile robotics.

Keywords

3D vision; 3D machine vision, robot vision, robot guidance

Rationale

3D imaging and analysis is widely used in diverse automation applications across many industries. Commercial components and software are readily available in the machine vision component marketplace which perform well for typical use cases. However, there exist no standard guides for the selection of these technologies. For optimal performance, users will benefit from guidance that will help ensure success in all implementations. Typical users in this market include systems integrators, machine builders and end users.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
