1.1 This specification establishes the framework for the creation of part families whereby additive manufacturing (AM) processes and quality controls can be applied across a number of specific parts so that the parts meet all design criteria.
1.2 The part family framework can be used to define AM qualification and process validation procedures for groups of parts.
1.3 Similar NDE and acceptance criteria can be applied across part families.
1.4 It is the final responsibility of the Cognizant Engineering Organization (CEO) to make the final determination to include or not include parts within a given family. Part classification should be considered when creating a part family.
1.5 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Other units are included only for informational purposes.

This Standard will provide best practices and guidance to enable the application of Additive Manufacturing (AM) Part Family framework for Qualification and Certification (Q&C). Current Q&C methods are costly, and heavy on time and resource. The evolution from ‘Point Design (or Qualification)’ approaches (whereby all engineering data are related to a single part number), to more efficient methods so that multiple part numbers can be covered by a shared engineering data approach, is highly desirable. Enabling Part Family based approaches will open a greater range of components across various industries where the business case may not have previously been viable for AM, and will act as a significant stepping-stone towards Process Qualification.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
