1. Scope

Definition—This specification defines acceptable means to validate the equipment, location, and installation of lithium batteries on aircraft, given special considerations for the particular characteristics inherent with the use of lithium technology. This practice does not change or create any additional regulatory requirements nor does it authorize changes in or permit deviations from existing regulatory requirements.
Applicability—This specification is directed to air carriers, air operators, design approval holders, Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) holders, maintenance providers, repair stations, and those performing field approval modifications or repairs.

Keywords

lithium battery; aircrafts; energy storage

Rationale

This specification provides guidance for the installation of lithium energy storage devices. The potential hazards associated with the handling and safe use of products with lithium batteries should follow manufacturers’ instructions, industry practice, and cautionary procedures. Installation should consider all aspects of use, including a thorough evaluation of the equipment specifications, limitations, and maintenance requirements.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
