New Test Method for A-UGV Reaction to Detected Stationary Objects

1. Scope

1.1 Objects can be located within the A-UGV path. As such, A-UGVs are expected to react to detected objects in the path by stopping near or navigating around the object prior to collision with the object. This document defines standard tests that demonstrate and confirm intended A-UGV reaction to detected stationary objects.
1.2 The test includes a method to confirm the repeatability of object detection by an A-UGV and to document the A-UGV reaction to detected/undetected objects.
1.3 Objects may be any type typically found in the A-UGV path. To promote test repeatability, this standard suggests the use of objects that are readily available (see WK75129 Guide-Standard Objects). If a standard object is not available or an alternative object is to be used, F3381 shall be used and reported accordingly.
1.4 This standard is intended for use by A-UGV Manufacturers, Installers and Users to quantitatively confirm the detection of objects and repeatability of an A-UGV’s reaction to detected objects.
1.5 This test method shall be performed in a testing laboratory or the location where the specified apparatus and environmental conditions are implemented. Environmental conditions shall be recorded as specified in F3218.
1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Where shown, the values in parentheses are approximate mathematical conversions to inch-pound units given for the purpose of specifying material dimensions or quantities. The values in parentheses are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.7 This standard does not address safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate health and safety practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. B56.5provides safety standards which must be adhered to during these A-UGV tests.
1.8 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Rationale

F3265 describes tests for ITSDF B56.5 test pieces suddenly appearing in the path. There are currently no standards outlining the tests to be performed to measure vehicle reaction to stationary objects in the vehicle path. A-UGVs are expected to react to detected objects in the path by stopping near or navigating around the object prior to collision with the object. This document defines standard tests that demonstrate and confirm intended A-UGV reaction to detected stationary objects. The standard will be used by A-UGV manufacturers, users, and installers of these systems.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
