New Test Method for Creation of Study Group for Method Development of FID and FID-MS Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis

1. Scope

This study group has carried the development of precision of four gasolines analyzed by FID and FID-MS and consists of scientists from GM, CRC, SWRI, Gage, SSI. The precision has selected certain group of analytes which are important for gasolines, specifically of aromatics ranging from C6-C14. Analysis has developed precision data for PMI (particle index). This group has spent considerable effort in naming compounds using IUPAC nomenclature and CAS numbers for identification. It is hoped that the completion of this data will result in the development of a new method. The working group has identified the potential for making improvements and modifications that should normalize chromatography across groups industry wide. The areas targeted for improvement are as follows: aromatic precision statements, unified compound nomenclature, peak integration, component response factors and retention indices.

Keywords

Aromatics analysis, Gasoline, Spark-ignition Fuel, GC, MS

Rationale

This proposed study groups focus is the identification of aromatics extended to higher carbon numbers such as C14 where the heavier aromatics greatly contributed to the PMI. The study has used the MS to ascertain the aromatic identification obtained by the FID. This study has focused its research on the aromatics in Spark-ignition Fuel.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
