New Test Method for Evaluating CO2 Indoor Air Quality Sensors or Sensor Systems Used in Indoor Applications

1. Scope

This proposed test method uses a chamber system equipped with a CO2 reference monitor to evaluate the performance of stationary indoor air quality CO2 sensors and CO2 sensor systems used for CO2 detection and measurement. Sensors or sensor systems are evaluated against a CO2 reference monitor to assess the relative performance of the sensor or sensor system when subjected to various tests, such as varying temperature between 20C and 50C, relative humidity from 40% to 80%, and CO2 concentration from 450 to 5000 ppm as reported by a CO2 reference monitor. Certified CO2 cylinders are used in performing these tests and results are expressed as percent difference from a CO2 reference monitor.

Keywords

carbon dioxide;

Rationale

Based on falling costs, consumer-grade CO2 sensors and sensing devices are gaining wide adoption for reporting indoor CO2 concentrations and controlling ventilation systems. Better information is needed with respect to the performance of these sensors so that users can make informed decisions regarding their selection and specification. The primary anticipated users are expected to be IAQ sensor and sensing device manufacturers, smart ventilation system manufacturers, and laboratories. This standard is likely to be referenced in standards and codes that address IAQ in buildings, such as ASHRAE 62.2, ASHRAE 62.1, the International Residential Code, the International Mechanical Code, and California Title 24.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
