New Test Method for Fiber Removal and Fiber Characterization in Equine Surfaces

1. Scope

Standardization of specifications, test methods and practices for sports equipment, surfaces, and facilities to reduce inherent risk of injuries and promote knowledge as it relates to these standards. The committee shall coordinate this work with other ASTM technical committees and other organizations in this area.

Fiber Removal; Fiber Characterization; FTIR

Fibers are routinely found in equine surfaces and are used to physically alter the behavior of the surface such as the slide, grip, shear strength, and moisture retention properties. Fully separating and characterizing these materials helps determine the nature of these materials, such as the hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties of the fiber. This will also allow equine surface venues to verify the material purchased and ensure the materials meet any required environmental and safety regulations.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
