1.1 This specification covers requirements and test methods for a transition mat. 1.2 This specification is applicable to the use of a transition mat in a channel or outfall to prevent scouring below and downstream of a pipe or culvert outlet. The transition mat should mechanically protect soil from scour and erosion until the shear forces have dissipated enough for other erosion control methods are able to prevent soil erosion. NOTE 1Note that proper installation and maintenance are critical for the effective functioning of a transition mat. 1.3 The practices presented herein are intended to ensure that the transition mat is a permanent BMP for a variety of performance objectives. 1.4 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in inch-pound units are provided for information only. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
