New Practice for Pull Testing Permanent Magnet Assemblies

1. Scope

Covers the procedure(s) for conducting a pull test on a permanent magnet assembly. This practice applies to any permanent magnet assembly whose main application is to provide holding force.

Keywords

Magnetic holding force; magnetic pull test; pull test; breakaway force

Rationale

Mechanical holding using magnetic force is applied in many fields. There is currently no guidance about standardized ways to do a test to measure and document magnetic holding force. It is a test that involves many factors which must be considered. It will be used for documenting magnetic holding force for magnetic assemblies, in quality control applications and in R&D. Potential users are magnet manufacturers, magnet systems manufacturers, and end users of magnetic holding devices.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
