New Guide for Determination of Cannabinoid Concentrations in Cannabis Plant Material, Extracted Oil, and Gummies Using Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy

1. Scope

This quantitative test guide describes the preparation and analysis of cannabis plant material and extracted oil for the determination of cannabinoid concentration in test samples greater than 0.1% utilizing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). The primary cannabinoids, but not limited to, that can be analyzed by this procedure include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA).

Keywords

Potency testing, cannabinoid testing, hemp, marijuana, extract, crude extract

Rationale

The requirement of cannabis farmers and processing labs to accurately test cannabinoids for both legal and quality reasons is now a necessity. While most labs are utilizing HPLC for this work, some are starting to take advantage of NIR for the speed and high-throughput allowing them to gather more data at different steps of the process. NIR is a spectroscopy technique that will allow users to measure major cannabinoid concentrations greater than 0.1%.
