New Practice for Assessment of Gas Chromatography and Electron Ionization Mass Spectrometry Data During the Qualitative Analysis of Seized Drugs

1. Scope

1.1 This standard describes procedures to evaluate gas chromatography (GC) and electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS) data generated during the qualitative analysis of seized drugs. This practice also includes a framework for establishing acceptance criteria for GC and EI-MS data comparisons. 1.2 This standard is intended to be used by individuals with discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired through education, training and experience (E2326). 1.3 The identification of seized drugs using GC and EI-MS should occur within the context of an appropriate analytical scheme, as described in ASTM E2329.

Keywords

GC-EI-MS; acceptance criteria for GC/MS data; evaluation of qualitative data; evaluation of GC/MS data;

Rationale

There is no standard that addresses the evaluation of data and subsequently the criteria that should be used for the acceptance of analytical data generated by these techniques. Furthermore, there is no standard that even addresses how a laboratory may proceed in developing a minimum criteria for the evaluation of data. Thus, laboratories vary in how their analysts evaluate and accept data for the identification substances in seized drugs. This standard provides a framework in how to evaluate GC/EI-MS data and establish minimum acceptance criteria of such data. GC/EI-MS is the main analytical technique used in the qualitative analysis of seized drugs. Thus, every drug chemistry analyst will be able to refer to this standard to assist them in the evaluation of their data. In addition, this document will create a more standardized process in which laboratories establish their minimum acceptance criteria of data.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
