New Test Method for Moisture Release Duration of Fresh Concrete

1. Scope

The purpose of the proposed standard is to assist design professionals in determining when freshly placed concrete has released the majority of its free moisture under laboratory conditions.

Keywords

concrete, moisture content, moisture relaease rate, concrete additives

Rationale

This test method has applications in the roofing and flooring industry as it relates to the installation of roofing and flooring products. At this time a number of manufacturers of roofing materials requires the architect or engineer to decide when it is acceptable to install roofing products over a concrete deck. However, there are no reliable means to assess the moisture content of the concrete in the field, especially for roof decks. The intent of this test method is to determine the minimum duration of time needed for the release of the free moisture in the concrete. This duration could then be used by a design professional as the minimum time needed before a material could be installed. As more data from testing is compiled, it may be possible to extrapolate the data to actual conditions in the field.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
