ASTM International’s soil and rock committee (D18) has awarded its C.A. Hogentogler Award to Jean Benoît, Steven Wuebbolt, and Philippe Reiffsteck.
Benoît serves as professor emeritus at University of New Hampshire, Wuebbolt is a geotechnical engineer at Right-Trak Design, Inc., and Reiffsteck is a research professor and head of the soils, rocks, and geotechnical structures (SRO) lab at Gustave Eiffel University.
The award is given in honor of the committee’s first chair and in recognition of a paper of outstanding merit on soils for engineering purposes presented before ASTM. Benoît, Wuebbolt, and Reiffsteck were honored for their paper, “The Permeator: A Rapid Tool for Field Hydraulic Conductivity Testing in Granular Soils,” published in ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal. The paper was co-authored by Alexander LeFebvre, Bruma Souza, and Noah MacAdam.
An ASTM member from 1990-2006, Benoît has also held memberships with the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
Benoît’s career concentration is geotechnical engineering, and he has been with University of New Hampshire since 1983, after receiving his doctoral degree from Stanford University in the same year. He has also authored numerous publications and been involved in many consulting projects.
Wuebbolt’s expertise is geotechnical engineering, and he received his master of science degree in the field from University of New Hampshire in 2020. Prior to his current position, he worked for Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc.
Reiffsteck received his doctoral degree in civil engineering (1996), from Blaise Pascal University (Université Blaise-Pascal). He has held his current position at Gustave Eiffel University since 2020.
