ASTM International has announced a new subcommittee under their textiles committee (D13). This subcommittee (D13.67) will be called “3D Digital Fabrics.”
The subcommittee will share the scope of D13 as a whole, that is, development of standards which relate to characteristics, properties, nomenclature, and uses of textiles, but with particular reference to 3D Digital Fabrics, including physics and textures.
The subcommittee’s first proposed standard will be “Standard Test Method for 3D Fabric Physics Drape Validation (comparison of digital fabric to physical fabric)”.
According to ASTM member Michelle Greenhouse, leader of the standard’s working group and chair of the 3D Retail Coalition Innovation Committee (3DRC), this testing standard will provide a way to empirically validate the drape of digital fabrics when compared to their physical counterparts.
“An empirical standard in place will build confidence in and adoption of digital fabrics, which are the underpinning for accurate digital twins of full garments,” says Greenhouse. “As the apparel industry continues to be shaped by advancement in digital technology, the need for accurate, reliable, and universal standards is clearer than ever.”
Greenhouse further notes that the standard will increase consistency in 3D fabric (digital twins) and build trust and credibility of the testing methods and 3D software used to create them.
